The young Italian pianist Alessandra Pompili presented on this CD plays a cross section of Hovhaness' piano music, from some early works from 1938 ( the two Ghazals op . 36 and the Fantasy , Op . 15 ) to the Sonata Cougar Mountain op . 390 from 1985.

There may be the temptation to 'make something' of these pieces by bolstering the dynamics or timbre. Alessandra Pompili resists consistently. Instead, you have an unerring sense for the own physiognomy of mostly epigrammhaft short pieces as well as for specific Indian rhythm models in the Shalimar suite.

Die junge italienische Pianistin Alessandra Pompili präsentiert auf der vorliegenden CD einen Querschnitt aus Hovhaness’ Klaviermusik, der sich von einigen hier erstmals eingespielten Frühwerken aus dem Jahr 1938 (die beiden Ghazals op. 36 und die Fantasy op. 15) bis zur 1985 vollendeten Sonate Cougar Mountain op. 390 erstreckt.

Der Versuchung, aus diesen Stücken «etwas zu machen», sie dynamisch oder klangfarblich zusätzlich aufzupolstern, widersteht Alessandra Pompili konsequent. Sie besitzt stattdessen ein untrügliches Gespür für die ganz eigene Physiognomie der größtenteils epigrammhaft kurzen Stücke sowie für die spezifisch indischen Rhythmusmodelle etwa in der Shalimar-Suite.
